Public Meeting:
Midlands Coalition Against Prison Expansion
Sunday 5th August, 1pm - 4pm
Community Action on Prison Expansion (CAPE) are inviting you to the first meeting for a midlands coalition against prison expansion. Since 2016 the government have announced 6 new prisons for England and Wales. Campaign groups mobilizing against these projects have seen half of them now postponed or cancelled, leaving the midlands at present the main national frontline for expansion.
In November 2016 the government announced proposals for the construction of two new prisons in the midlands, one at the site of HMP Glen Parva, in Leicester, and the other at the site of HMP Wellingborough, in Wellingborough. Prison expansion brings a raft of detrimental local, regional and national impacts: these new prisons will funnel huge volumes of public resources into the private sector; place a massive burden on already over-stretched services, healthcare and social care in particular; and subject people in prison to violent and unsafe conditions, perpetuating cycles of harm.
We’re inviting people and groups from across the midlands to meet and discuss coordinating resistance to the new developments and for alternatives to criminalization and imprisonment. Support with expenses can be made available (for example for travel or childcare) if they’re a barrier to attendance. If you have any other questions or requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact CAPE.
