The Silence

A new play about identity, suppression and the need to talk.

​

Balsall Heath, 1976. Two years since the Birmingham Pub Bombings and anyone with an Irish accent is suspect. Kathleen is a prisoner in her own home, waiting for Michael to be released, waiting for the beating on her door to cease, waiting for the hatred to subside and life to return to normal.

Over 40 years on, the media is feverish with the terror attacks on Westminster and Manchester. Journalists descend on the streets on 'Britain's jihadi capital', hunting down a story. Holed up in his bedroom, Adil can't revise, can't concentrate, can't breathe.

Two suspect communities, two ages of terror. Two neighbour - strangers fight their fears about each other, and struggle to break the silence around mass blame and hate crime.

​

This premier production marks the opening of The GAP's Basement Theatre and a new approach to create radical, intimate theatre for young and community audiences, informed by local stories, and crafted by a new generation ensemble of theatre makers.
